Australia: Control of chemical ingredients used in cosmetics transitions to AICIS

June 05, 2020

The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) has controlled the regulation of the chemical ingredients used in cosmetics in Australia. From 1 July 2020, this control will be performed by the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS).

While the general outline of the process is similar (i.e. requirement to register businesses and ingredient listing and assessment), some specific steps have changed. Chemical categories, based on which the need for a risk assessment or authorisation is decided, are completely different; and record keeping requirements have also slightly changed.

AICIS has provided several short educational videos covering different elements of the new scheme which can be found here.
