Regulatory Reform Task Force

April 21, 2017

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published a notice in the Federal Register requesting comments on regulations that may be appropriate for “repeal, replacement, or modification.” This notice is being issued in accordance with Executive Order 13777 entitled “Enforcing the Regulatory Reform Agenda,” which was signed on February 24, 2017.

Regulatory Reform Task Force

The goal of EO 13777 is “alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens.” EO 13777 requires federal agencies to establish a Regulatory Reform Task Force to identify and make recommendations regarding regulations that meet the following criteria:

  • Are detrimental to the job market
  • Are ineffective or obsolete
  • Generate more costs than benefits
  • Will create serious hindrances to regulatory reform and policies
  • Rely on data or information not available to the public, or are not sufficiently transparent to meet the standard of reproducibility
  • Derive from previously overturned or heavily modified EOs

Request for Public Comment

EPA’s request for public comments is consistent with the requirements outlined in the EO, which states that the Task Forces should seek input from other entities affected by federal regulations. This includes state, local, and tribal governments, small businesses, consumers, non-governmental organizations, and trade associations.
