Fertilizer regulations (CFIA) – Canada
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) – Fertilizer Safety Section regulates fertilizers and supplements (substances other than fertilizers that improve the physical condition of soil or plant growth) under the Fertilizers Act.
The Fertilizers Act Canada requires that all regulated fertilizer and supplement products be properly labeled, effective and safe for humans, plants, animals and the environment. All fertilizers and supplements that are imported and/or sold in Canada are regulated by CFIA, which works together with provinces and municipalities to ensure that all products meet the highest standards of safety.
Some fertilizers and most supplements are subject to registration and require a comprehensive pre-market assessment prior to their import and/or sale in Canada. CFIA’s pre-market assessment consists of a detailed evaluation of product safety information and labeling. Products that are exempt from registration are still subject to regulation and must meet all the necessary standards at the time of sale or import.

Some fertilizers and most supplements require a comprehensive pre-market assessment prior to their import and/or sale in Canada to ensure that they are safe for humans, plants, animals, and the environment. At TSG, our scientific experts can undertake a review of the relevant safety assessments, examining all ingredients in the product, to ensure there are no delays to processing registration applications.
Foreign companies importing fertilizers and supplements into Canada are required to identify a Canadian resident agent on application forms. This provides the corporation with local representation in order to receive the service of documents, as well as deal with administrative matters locally. TSG’s Canadian office acts as the registered agent for many clients, providing strategic advice and guidance in addition to the registered office address.
All products require a review against the current Canadian regulations and that review is what will determine whether a pre-market assessment is required by the agency or not.
